FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Sr., Goalkeeper,
Anton Martinsson of the Alaska Nanooks hockey team was named the WCHA Goalkeeper of the Week for his great play on Nov. 2 in the Nanooks victory over Bemidji State. The team split the weekend series with the Beavers, but behind Martinsson's performance, took game two, 3-1, the first home victory this season.
Martinsson, while in goal, stopped 37 of the 38 shots put on net, allowing only the one goal in the first period. The Beavers put the pressure on Martinsson early, throwing 18 shots on goal in the first period. After stopping 18 of 19, Martinsson went perfect the rest of the game; 11 saves in the second and eight in the third.
The 37 saves resulted in the third highest in Martinsson's career at Alaska, giving him a new 2019-20 season-high and he was just two below his career-high of 39. Head coach
Erik Largen kept it quick and easy when talking about Martinsson's performance this weekend, "He [Anton] was fantastic Saturday night for us, he made critical saves at key points in the game."
This is Martinsson's fourth time winning WCHA Goalkeeper of the week and this is the first time this season he has won this award.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team is back in action this weekend on Nov. 8-9 as they host the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday and Saturday. Both games will be at 7:07 p.m. AKT at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
