@NanooksRifle top UTEP Miners on the Road

RESULTSĀ 

EL PASO, Texas –
The No. 10-ranked Alaska Nanook rifle team competed against the No. 18-ranked UTEP Miners today, Nov. 22 in their first competition on the road this season. The Nanooks tallied an aggregate team score of 4647 to take the win against UTEP's 4597.

Four Nanook shooters secured spots in the top five at the match. Sophomore, Kellen McAferty took the top spot with an 1165 aggregate. In second, senior, Amy Gentry scored an 1164 – one point behind McAferty. Junior, Haley Castillo, registered an 1157 to ring in at third. Freshman, Cassidy Wilson rounded out the top five with a 1153, just two points behind UTEP's Jonna Warnken (1155).

In the smallbore competition, the Nanooks registered a team total of 2296 to squeak past UTEP's 2289. McAferty (586) took first in the individual smallbore rankings, leading the rest of the competition by an impressive 10 points.

The Nanooks registered the top air rifle score, topping UTEP 2351-2308. Junior, Haley Castillo lead the individual air rifle competition with a 590. Amy Gentry (589), Cassidy Wilson (588), and Grace Nelson (584) took spots two through four, respectively.

"This was our first away match of the year and UTEP hosted a good event." Stated Head coach, Layne Lewis, "Everyone had some good strings in both guns today. We are going to take what we learned from today's match and build our strengths as we go into our next at Air Force on Sunday."

The Nanooks will face off against the No. 4-ranked Air Force Academy Falcons on Sunday (Nov. 24) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The first relay is scheduled for 6:00am AKST, while relay two is scheduled for 10:30am AKST.
