NAMPA, Idaho – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team defeated the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks today, Nov. 2 in straight sets. This was their fourth, three-set victory of the season and their 11th win, improving to 11-11, 8-6 GNAC.
The Nanooks were led by
Lahra Weber,
AveRee Reynolds and
Kim Wong in their three-set victory, with all three tallying double-digit kills and a plus .300 hit percentage. Emily Moorhead added three of her seven.
Set two was Wong's set. She added half of her kills, checking in with five second-set kills. Alaska took the second set easily, 25-14. They jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead before the Nighthawks made a small push to get within two. The 'Nooks responded quickly, extending the lead back out to 18-10 before grabbing the win.
Head coach
Brian Scott felt the team played one of their best matches of the season, "That was maybe one of our most consistent matches of the year. We did a great job on both the defensive and offense sides. Defensively we put a ton of pressure on them with the serve. That made it a little easier for our defense to make some solid reads. On offense, we passed really well and did a good job getting multiple hitters involved. We took control of the momentum and allowed ourselves to score points today. Really proud of how everyone played today."
The third set held a lot of the same for Alaska; a spread offense and an effective offense. The Nanooks as a team tallied 19 kills and forced only two errors, coming out to a .459 team swing percentage to end the game.
Cate Whiting added 40 assists today and Weber led the way defensively for the 'Nooks with 14 digs.
Markie Miller added nine kills and Moorhead finished with seven.
The Nanooks are back at home next week on Thursday, Nov. 7 against Concordia University (Portland) and Nov. 9 against Western Oregon. Game one will be a 7:00 p.m. AKT start and the WOU game will be a 2:00 p.m. AKT start as a result of the home hockey game that same night.
