LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team lost their first game of the season during their California road-trip on Nov. 14 to Biola University. This loss drops the 'Nooks to 2-1, 0-0 GNAC in the early part of the season.
The Alaska Nanooks found themselves in a hole after the first quarter, getting down 9-19 after the first 10 minutes. The offense could not buy a bucket, shooting a combined 19.2% in the first half. The second quarter saw the Eagles of Biola University extend their lead to 17-42 at halftime.
Jocelyn Gandara led the first half scoring for the 'Nooks with five points on 2-4 shooting from the field. Gandara made the only Nanooks three-pointer in the first half as well, as the rest of the team shot 0-10 from three, leading to a 9.1% from three-point range.
The second half saw the Alaska offense and defense come to life.
Kylie Wallace and Gandara led the charge for the 'Nooks as
Kylie Wallace scored all of her game-high 17 points in the second half on 6-8 shooting from the field and 5-6 shooting from the free throw line. Alongside the scoring, Wallace picked six steals from BU ball handlers. The Nanooks came out of the locker room and jumped all over Biola offensively, outscoring them 17-4 in the third quarter, making it a 34-46 ballgame heading into the fourth quarter.
The defense held strong yet again for the Alaska team, however, after falling behind 40-57 early in the fourth, the climb became too steep for the 'Nooks. Alaska outscored Biola again in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles lead remained too large for Alaska to overcome.
Wallace ended the day with her second double-double of the season, recording 17 points and 10 rebounds, adding her six steals to her name before fouling out. Gandara was next up in the scoring category for the Nanooks, finishing with 16 points on 70% shooting from the field.
Sam Tolliver worked hard for eight points, despite a tough day from the field, going 1-12, Tolliver made her presence felt from the free throw line, ending the day 6-8 from the line.
This was the first loss of the season for the Alaska women's basketball team who gets ready to play again on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Point Loma in San Diego. The Alaska versus Point Loma game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. AKT tip-off as live stats and video will be available on the Point Loma Stretch Internet Portal.
