Sea Lions Defeat @NanooksWBB in San Diego

POINT LOMA, Calif. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday, Nov. 16, 58-88. This ends the Nanooks trip to Southern California and puts them at 2-2, 0-0 GNAC on the season.

The Nanooks fell behind early in the first quarter when the Sea Lions pushed a 2-8 on to the scoreboard. A small run led by Jocelyn Gandara, Kylie Wallace and Sam Tolliver pulled the Alaska team within five at 11-16 before PLNU started to pull away and hold a 12-23 lead after the first quarter. After the Nanooks grabbed the first bucket of the second quarter with a Gandara jumper, the Sea Lions went a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 14-36. The Nanooks defense responded, however, grabbing 10 more points to cut the deficit to 24-38 at halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, the Sea Lions immediately extended their lead, making it a 28-51 lead less than four minutes into the quarter. The Nanooks made a small push of their own, getting back within 17 points with one minute remaining in the third quarter after a pair of Wallace free throws made it 40-57. Unfortunately for the 'Nooks, that was the closest they would come to PLNU for the remainder of the night.

Point Loma would go on to claim the 58-88 victory over Alaska behind 45.1% shooting from the field and 54.5% shooting from three point range while the 'Nooks only managed 27% FG shooting and 21.1% three point shooting. Kylie Wallace and Jocelyn Gandara led the way on offense for Alaska as both of them recorded 18 points. Wallace shot 6-13 from the field and Gandara was 4-9. Both of them were the top rebounders for the team as well as Wallace recorded eight and Gandara grabbed 7. Sam Tolliver added nine points, two steals and one block to the Nanooks totals.

Head coach Kerri Nakamoto had this to say about her team's performance this weekend, "This trip provided us with a good gauge for where we are and what we need to continue to improve upon. I think Pt Loma played really hard and were tough and we lost our composure at times and got exposed. There were some good moments for us both offensively and defensively within the game and we will work to make that more consistent when we get to practice this week to prepare for next weeks games."

The Nanooks will return to Anchorage next weekend when they take part in the Seawolf Hoops Classic against Westminster College and Parkside.
