FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Great Northwest Athletic Conference released their 2019 Fall All-Academic list and the Alaska Nanooks had 18 representatives from cross country and volleyball. To be eligible for the GNAC All-Academic teams, you must be a semester into your schooling (First semester-Freshman not eligible), and have maintained a 3.20 GPA through the previous schooling period.
Alaska cross country received 11 nominations to the academic list; four from the men's team and seven from the women's team. The men leading off the list for the Nanooks is
Josiah Alverts, a Jr. from Palmer, Alaska who earned a 3.92 GPA as a physics major. Second on the list for Alaska is So.,
Karl Danielson from Kenai, Alaska. Danielson worked for a 3.66 GPA in his pursuit for a fire science and homeland security degree. The third 'Nook is a Fairbanks local,
Jack Matherly. The So., runner earned a 3.39 GPA while earning a diploma in general studies. The final Alaska men's cross country team member to make the list is
Zephan Ozturgut, who is also a So., and from Anchorage, Alaska earned a 3.86 in biological sciences.
The women's cross country team had seven athletes chosen to the list for the fall of 2019. Staring the list off for the Nanooks is Sr.,
Alex Bergholtz. Bergholtz is from Kenai, Alaska and earned a 3.87 GPA in chemistry. Second is
Hannah Dueling who comes from Whitehorse, Yukon. She earned a 3.82 GPA in general sciences. Third for the women's running team is
Anja Maijala, who earned a 3.67 GPA in wildlife biology and conservation. The Jr. joined the Nanooks from Wrenshall, Minn. Our fourth representative is
Maggie Meeds who earned a 3.24 in biological sciences.
Julia Murph, the So., engineering major was next on the list as she held a 3.82 GPA. The final two are the first and only Alaska athletes to claim a 4.0 GPA this year on the list as both
Catherine Reed-Metayer and
Sage Robine, both So., earned straight-A's in the classroom last semester. Reed-Metayer is from St. Ferrelo Les Neiges, Que and is a psychology major and Robine is from Rossland, B.C. and is majoring in biological sciences.
The Alaska volleyball team wraps up the 2019 Fall All-Academic list with seven selections of their own. At the top of the list for volleyball is Sr.,
Mica Chen. Chen is studying interdisciplinary studies and claimed a 3.65 GPA.
Zoey Keene joins Chen on the list after getting a 3.53 in her biological studies.
Emily Moorhead is next on the list as the Jr. received a 3.47 GPA in her psychology studies.
Makena Overbey, the So. from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. held a 3.59 GPA through her criminal justice studies. As a biological sciences major, So.,
Taylor Overn earned a 3.31 GPA last semester. The final two named to the All-Academic list are
Lahra Weber and
Cate Whiting. Weber received a 3.96 in her chemistry studies and Whiting received a 3.97 GPA in her pursuit of a civil engineering degree.
