McAferty and Castillo Lead @NanooksRifle in Victory Over Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– The No. 6-ranked Alaska Nanook Rifle team took first in a tri-match against the Citadel Bulldogs co-ed and women's rifle teams at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Nanooks registered an aggregate total of 4669 while the Bulldog's co-ed team had a total aggregate of 4559. The Citadel's women's team only shot air rifle where they tallied a score of 1982.

In the smallbore competition, the Nanooks had a total 2316 to take the win against the Citadel's co-ed team who recorded a score of 2247. The Citadel's women's team did not shoot smallbore.

The Nanooks had a strong air rifle match, registering a 2353 to take the top spot. The Citadel's co-ed team took second with a 2312 and the Citadel's women's team took third with a 1982.

Underclassman duo,
Kellen McAferty (1174) and Haley Castillo (1170) lead the Nanooks to victory, with both individuals shooting personal records in smallbore.

"We shot great today, there's no better to start off a road trip than with two personal bests," stated head coach,
Layne Lewis. "Kellen with a 588 and Haley with a 575, both in smallbore. Everyone is excited to carry on this success to our two weekend matches in Ohio."

Individually, all of the Nanooks had top ten finishes. Kellen McAferty (1174), Haley Castillo (1170), and
J.T. Schnering (1167) secured the top three spots, respectively.

Freshman, Haley Castillo led the air rifle competition with a 595. Senior, J.T. Schnering was close behind with a 591.

In the smallbore competition freshman, Kellen McAferty, lead with a 588 and senior,
Robert Scott took second with a 577.

The Alaska Nanooks rifle team will be back in action this Saturday (Jan. 12) and Sunday (Jan. 13) at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
