@NanooksVB Earns First Conference Sweep at Home over Wolves

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – After two weeks on the road, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team returned to the Alaska Airlines Court on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep over the Western Oregon Wolves in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match. The Nooks went 25-21, 25-22 and 25-14 over WOU to improve their overall record to 4-10 and 2-5 in conference play, while the Wolves drop to 5-9 on the season and 2-5 in GNAC matches.

The victory marks the first conference sweep at home for Alaska since Nov. 11, 2017, where the Nanooks downed the Wolves 3-0 on the same court.

"I love the way our offense ran tonight," head coach Brian Scott said on Thursday. "We put balls down and it was fun to see us score points, especially when our passing was there. If I had any negative takeaway from tonight, it was just that I thought we played a little tight and tense. We had a brutal first half of conference play by facing some tough teams so it's nice to return home and get the win."

Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Tatum Upchurch posted her sixth double-double of the season on Thursday, registering 11 kills and 11 digs. Upchurch only tallied five errors off of 34 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .176. The Anchorage native also picked up one ace and one block assists for 12.5 points on the night.

Sophomore outside hitter Lahra Weber tied Upchurch for a team-best 11 kills, posting only four errors off of 31 total attempts for a match hitting percentage of .226. Weber also chipped in four digs, two aces and two solo blocks for a team-high 13.0 points.

Sophomore setter Cate Whiting led all players with 32 assists, while also boasting five kills, with zero errors off of 10 attempts for .500 hitting percentage. The Rapid City, South Dakota native also tallied seven digs, one ace and one block assist.

Freshman libero Makena Overbey led all players with 19 digs on the night, helping the Nanooks' team total of 50 digs.

Alaska outside their opponent in team hitting percentage (.243-0.87), assists (39-36), aces (5-3), digs (50-45), team blocks (6.0-5.0) and points (51.0-44.0). The Nanooks also went 38-for-59 for a team sideout percentage of 64.

The match also saw 15 tie scores and seven lead changes.

The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team returns to the Alaska Airlines Court for another GNAC matchup on Saturday, Sept. 29, as the team hosts the Concordia Cavaliers at 1pm AKT.
