Alaska Nanooks Day at Lavelle's Taphouse
The Alaska Nanooks have partnered up with Lavelle's Taphouse to host a fundraiser this Saturday, Apr. 21. From 12pm to 6pm AKT, $1 from every drink (beer, wine, cider or non-alcoholic beverages) will be donated to the Alaska Nanooks All-Sports Scholarship Fund. There will be season ticket packages and other goodies being given away at the top of every hour and two different 50/50 raffles throughout the day, as well as a food truck outside. There will be plenty of student-athletes, coaches and staff on hand to make your experience worthwhile.
This event is free, kid-friendly and open to the public.
@NanooksSwim's Kelly Wins Dean's Choice Award
Last week, Alaska swimming's junior
Cassidy Kelly won the Dean's Choice Award as part of the University's URSA Research Day. Kelly, along with her partners Aleksandra Milanovic, Nichole Lindsay, Teresa Sample, Devra Norling, Emma Benjamin won the award on their study, "Behavioral and Health Adaptations to Excessive Light Conditions in Arctic Summers" and was mentored by Dr. Dani Sheppard and Dr. Jen Peterson.
Their project, along with three others from the same competition, will move on to the Western Psychological Association Convention Apr. 26-29 in Portland, Oregon. Â
Student-Athletes Participate in Student-Athlete Day of Action, It's On Us Campaign
Yesterday, the Alaska Nanooks student-athletes vowed to stand together and speak out against sexual assault. The student-athletes came together to take a pledge through the It's On Us campaign to end sexual assault.
Started in 2014, It's On Us is a national campaign to end sexual assault through the creation of local and nationwide awareness and engagement on sexual violence. Read more about the Nanooks' effort on Student-Athlete Day of Action here >>

@AlaskaNanooksXC to Host Beach Bum 5km Run on Saturday
The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's cross country running team are hosting their fourth annual Beach Bum 5km Run on Saturday, Apr. 21. The run is open to runners and walkers of all ages with all the proceeds going to support the Nooks' two cross country programs.
The run will begin at 11am AKT and will take place at the Taku Parking Lot on the UAF campus. Racers can register online in advance for $20 (
https://racesonline.com/events/beachbum5k2018) until Thursday, Apr. 19. Runners can also register day-of for (cash or check only) for $30 or $10 for UAF students (with valid ID).
SAAC Nanook Olympics Set for April 28
Although the Alaska Nanooks varsity sports' 2017-18 seasons have ended, the competition is not quite over for the student-athletes and staff. Nanooks from each of the 10 varsity sports and members of the department will come together to compete in the annual Nanook Olympics on Saturday, Apr. 28 from 2-8pm AKT across several on-campus venues. The event is hosted by the Alaska Nanooks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is open to the public. Entry to the event is free and more details will be available next week for those who wish to attend.
