@NanooksRifle Finishes Sixth at NCAA Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team concluded the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon, posting a team aggregate score of 4667 to place sixth at the 2018 NCAA Rifle National Championships at the McAlister Field House at The Citadel campus. The Nooks shot a smallbore score of 2312 on Friday before posting an air rifle total of 2355 to rank sixth among the eight teams at the championships.

The University of Kentucky won the overall team national championship, collecting a team aggregate score of 4717. The five-time reigning national champion West Virginia placed second with a team score of 4708, followed by Texas Christian University (4701), Murray State (4684) and the U.S. Air Force Academy (4669).

Behind the Nooks, Ohio State placed seventh (4664) and the University of Nebraska ranked eighth (4655).

In Saturday's air gun competition, Alaska ranked fifth with a team score of 2355. Redshirt-senior Sagen Maddalena registered a team-best 596 in her relay, tying her for third overall individually. Senior Luke Johnson tallied a 590 in Saturday's competition, followed by junior JT Schnering (589) and sophomore Liam Eberhart (580). Junior Robert Scott tallied a 587 on Saturday, but due to an equipment miscalculation was disqualified from the air rifle event.

Maddalena's score qualified her for the air rifle individual finals, where the top-eight shooters of the day compete head-to-head until a final shooter is standing. After two, five-shot series, Maddalena ranked seventh with a score of 102.0.

Following the two, five-shot series, the finalists will shoot two more shots, with 50 seconds allotted per shot. Whomever has the lowest remaining score is eliminated.

After the first two shots, Maddalena ranked sixth with a 123.4 before moving to third place with a score of 144.7. Following another round, Maddalena ranked fourth with a score of 165.1.

After the third elimination round, Maddalena and TCU's Mindy Miles were tied in the bottom position with 185.5 points each. Maddalena and Miles had 50 seconds to rifle off one shot, highest score advances. Miles shot first to post a 9.0, while Maddalena registered a 10.3x to stay alive.

Unfortunately, following the next two shots Maddalena was eliminated with a finals score of 205.5 to rank fourth in the air rifle finals.

As the 2017-18 season comes to an end, the Alaska Nanooks say goodbye to Maddelana and Johnson, who are the two graduating seniors on this year's squad.
