BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – On Thursday, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced that Alaska Hockey's senior defenseman Zach Frye has been named the Defensive Player of the Month for February. It is Frye's fourth conference honor of his career, all coming within the second half of the 2017-18 season.

Despite going 2-5-1-0 in conference play last month, Frye continued to be the Alaska Nanooks hockey team's driving force offensively and defensively. The Spokane, Washington native led all league blueliners with 10 points, tallying three goals and seven assists through eight games.

In addition to points, Frye led all WCHA d-men in goals (2), assists (7), goals per games played (0.38), assists per games played (0.88), points per games played (1.25) and plus (11). Furthermore, Frye led all NCAA Division I men's ice hockey defensemen in shots on goal (36) and shots on goal per games played (4.50) in February.

Frye was named a two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week last month following Alaska's sweep over Ferris State on Feb. 5 and then this past Monday, Feb. 26 following the Nanooks' series versus UAA.

Frye collected at least one point in six of the Alaska's last eight contests, including three multi-point games. Frye's best night came on Feb. 2's 4-2 victory over Ferris State, as he tallied one goal and two assists for a three-point effort.

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will take on the No. 3 Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks this weekend in a best-of-three quarterfinal series to kick-off the 2018 WCHA Playoffs.
