WCHA Release
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – On Monday, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced that Alaska Nanooks hockey's senior defenseman
Zach Frye was named the Defensive Player of the Week. It is the Alaska Nanooks hockey team's eighth weekly honor of the season and Frye's third of his career.
Despite suffering a WCHA sweep at home to in-state rival Alaska Anchorage last weekend, the Nanooks concluded the 2017-18 regular season ranking eighth in the conference standings with 30 points, advancing the postseason.
Frye picked up two assists in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Seawolves before scoring both of Alaska's goals in Saturday's 3-2 decision to earn four points on the weekend. Frye led all WCHA defensemen and tied for second among all NCAA blueliners with his four-point effort, while also collecting a league-best 13 shots on goal.
Each of Frye's weekly honors have come throughout his senior season, all coming in the second half (Jan. 15 and Feb. 5).
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will travel to Mankato, Minnesota this weekend for a best-of-three quarterfinal series in the WCHA Playoffs against the Minnesota State University Mavericks this Friday, Mar. 2 and Saturday, Mar. 3 with a potential game three scheduled for Sunday, Mar. 4 at the Verizon Center. Puck-drop all three nights is slated for 4:07pm AKST.
