@NanooksMBB Snaps Eight-Game Losing Streak to UAA with 68-67 Victory

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A wild last minute of play propelled the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team past in-state rival Alaska Anchorage 68-67 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup at the Alaska Airlines Court on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Alaska's overall record to 4-5 and 1-1 in GNAC play, while the Seawolves drop to 5-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference contests.

The win marks the first time the Nanooks have defeated the Seawolves since Feb. 27, 2014, breaking an eight-game losing streak.

Trailing 65-60 with 20 seconds remaining, junior guard Alex Martin makes a good layup to pull the Nooks to within two. After a missed free throw shot by UAA's Tobin Karlberg, senior guard Alex Baham responded with two good free throw shots with nine seconds remaining.

At the seven second mark, Alaska's Spencer Sweet took a foul, resulting in UAA's Jack MacDonald earning two good free throws to give the Seawolves a 67-64 lead. Thankfully, UAA's Brennan Rymer took a late foul at the five second mark before Alaska's junior guard Aushanti Potts-Woods made one good shot and missed the second, making it 67-65.

With only one second remaining in regulation, UAA's Sjur Berg took a foul on Sweet as he started to go up for a three-pointer, resulting in three free throws at the end of the second half. Sweet drained all three free throws, lifting the Nooks pas the Seawolves 68-67.

As a team, Alaska shot 49 percent from the floor (24-for-49), 53.8 percent from three-point range (7-for-13) and 68.4 percent from the free throw line (13-for-19). The Nooks pulled down 10 offensive and 21 defensive boards to total 31 rebounds, while also chipping in 15 assists and four steals.

Potts-Woods led Alaska's scoring on Saturday, posting a game-high 17 points. Potts-Woods shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three-point range and 3-for-6 from the free throw line.

Junior forward Michael Kluting was the only player on the court to register a double-double, posting 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior guard Isiah Easaw led all players with eight assists.

The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will break for the holiday and return to competition after the New Year, hosting the Concordia University Cavaliers on Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Alaska Airlines Court before taking on the Western Oregon Wolves on Saturday, Jan. 5. Thursday's game is set for 7:30pm AKST, while Saturday is scheduled for 3:15pm AKST.
