FAIRBANKS, Alaska – On Friday, Alaska Nanooks associate head swim coach
Becca Weiland announced the addition of Sydney Gulon, who signed her National Letter of Intent to join the Nanooks swimming program in the fall of 2019. Gulon is the Nanooks' first signee throughout the 2018-19 early signing period.

A native of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Gulon will come to the University of Alaska Fairbanks after being a six-time letterwinner with the Detroit Lakes High School Lakers swim team. Most recently, Gulon placed within the top-eight in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 500-yard freestyle events at the 2018 Minnesota High School State Class "A" Championships.
Over the course of her four year career with DLHS, Gulon was a six-time medalist in the Minnesota High School Class "A" State Championships, including the 100-yard breaststroke (twice), the 500-yard freestyle (three times) and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
At the Minnesota High School Sections, Gulon was a 12-time Section 8A Champion in the freestyle, breaststroke and relay events. Additionally, Gulon was named the Minnesota High School Section 8A Swimmer of the year on two different occasions.
At the conference level, Gulon was an 18-time Mid-State Conference Champion and currently holds the conference record in the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle.
As a Laker, Gulon holds the DLHS team record in the 200-yard medley relay, the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Over the course of her high school athletic career, Gulon was voted the Detroit Lakes High School Swimming team's "Hardest Worker" on six occasions.
Had Gulon been a current swimmer for the Alaska Nanooks swim team, her top times would have added to the Nanooks' results with "B"-final appearance in the 100-yard breaststroke and a "C"-final appearance in both the 100-yard and 500-yard freestyle events at the Husky Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Out of the pool, Gulon is a four-time Detroit Lakes High School Gold Standard Academic Award winner. When she arrives on campus next fall, Gulon plans on majoring in Justice and minoring in Psychology.
"Sydney is a rare find, she can swim in any freestyle event, as well as the breaststroke events," Weiland said on Friday. "She has been dropping monster amounts of time in all of her events each year and yet, she only swims a few months out of the year for her high school. Sydney will be an asset to our freestyle, breaststroke and relay events, and we are so happy that she is a future Nanook."
