BOISE, Idaho – The Alaska Nanooks swimming team began their three-day meet at the Northwest Collegiate Invite on Friday, swimming in five events during the day.
The Nanooks placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of McKenzie Fazio, Ali Pecore, Talia Wentz and Janci Pangburn swam to a 1:36.25 finals time in the event. Alaska had two swimmers make the finals of the 500-yard freestyle, as Pecore secured a spot in the B Final and Kitti Marton swam in the C Final. Pecore finished 16th in the event, posting a 5:17.85. In the C Final, Marton led the way in her heat, touching the wall in 5:10.49 to claim 17th place.
Cosima Schmiedel and Giorgia Merlo both made the C Final for the 200-yard IM, with the duo finishing 19th (2:11.26) and 23rd (2:13.97), respectively. Meanwhile, in the A Final of the event, Dorka Dancsok swam to a rapid 2:04.02, taking second place and hitting an NCAA B Cut. Her time was a personal best for the event, beating her 2:04.12 set in 2023. That mark also ranks second in program history for the 200 IM.
The 50-yard freestyle was up next, as Pangburn claimed her spot in the B Final. In the finals, she swam to a 24.14, good for 15th place in the event. Fazio, Wentz and Pecore swam in the C Final for the 50 freestyle, with Fazio and Wentz finishing 19th and 20th with a 24.22 and 24.28, respectively. Pecore took 24th with a 24.72.
In the final event, the 'Nooks placed 12th in the 400-yard medley relay, with the team of Dancsok, Schmiedel, Merlo and Pangburn recording a 3:57.41.
The Nanooks are back in the pool tomorrow at 8 a.m. AKST for day two of the Northwest Collegiate Invite.
