Nighthawks Defeat @NanooksWBB in GNAC Opener

NAMPA, Idaho – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team dropped their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener on Thursday night, falling 92-53 to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa. The Nanooks fall 3-4 overall on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Nighthawks improve to a perfect 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in league contests.

Coach's Comments
"I think the score isn't quite an accurate depiction of the game tonight. I thought we played and competed really well for three quarters but let things get away from us a bit toward the end. I was happy how we handled the press NNU threw at us but we will continue to work and improve." – Head coach Kerri Nakamoto said on Thursday.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Nooks hung with their opponents through the first two quarters of the game, only being outscored 16-11 in the first and 17-14 in the second, but fell in the third 33-21 before NNU poured it on in the fourth, 26-7.
  • Alaska earned 18 points in the paint, 17 points off of the bench, 10 points off of second chances, five points off of turnovers and two points off of fast breaks.
  • Alaska shot 33.3 percent from the floor (20-for-60), 28.6 percent from three-point range (6-for-21) and 63.6 percent from the free throw line (7-for-11).
  • The Nanooks also tallied 10 offensive rebounds and 20 defensive for a total of 30 boards against the Nighthawks, while also picking up 14 assists, 11 steals and three blocks.
Alaska Leaders
  • Junior guard Kylie Wallace and senior forward Marian Wamsley tied for a team-best 10 points each against the Nighthawks.
  • Wallace shot 4-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, while Wamsley shot 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-4 from the free throw line.
  • Both Wamsley, Wallace, sophomore guard Kylie Wallace and senior guard Angela Murnion picked up four rebounds against NNU for a team-high.
  • Wallace led the Nanooks in assists with four.
Next Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will continue conference play on the road, taking on the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg, Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm AKST.
