#4 Vikings Snap @NanooksVB Winning Streak, 3-0

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday, as the Nooks fell in straight-sets to the No. 4 Western Washington Vikings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup at the Alaska Airlines Court.

The Nooks went 22-25, 20-25 and 20-25 against the Vikings, dropping their overall record to 10-11 and 8-6 in conference play, while the Vikings improve to 19-3 overall and remain undefeated in league contests, 14-0.

Alaska remains tied for fourth place in the GNAC standings with Seattle Pacific, each with an 8-6 conference mark.

The loss ends the Nanooks' seven-match conference winning streak, a program-best since joining the GNAC in the 2001 season.

"Losing is just as valuable, from a learning standpoint, as winning," head coach Brian Scott said on Saturday. "You know, it's been nice to have this stretch of winning and us doing a lot of good things but I noticed we weren't exactly comfortable coming into today's match against Western Washington. We knew we were going to have our hands full but I think it was good for us to see that we still have a little bit of a gap we need to close between the top teams in this conference. Tonight in particular, we needed to do more for longer periods of time."

Alaska was led by sophomore outside hitter Lahra Weber, who tied the match-high with 11 kills. The Berlin, Germany native also chipped in five digs, two assists and one block assists for 11.5 points on the day.

Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Markie Miller followed closely behind with eight kills, while also adding a match-high four aces for a team-best 12.0 points.

Junior middle blocker Kim Wong also chipped in to Alaska's offense with nine kills and one solo block for 10.0 points.

Sophomore setter Cate Whiting led her teammates in assists, posting 28 on the day.

Defensively, Alaska was led by freshman libero Makena Overbey, who tallied a team-best 18 digs. Overbey also added four assists and one ace for the Nanooks against the Vikings. Whiting and redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Tatum Upchurch followed Overbey's lead with seven digs each.

The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team hits the road next week, taking on the Concordia Cavaliers in Portland, Oregon on Thursday, Oct. 25 before heading to Monmouth, Oregon to face the Western Oregon Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 27. Thursday's match is scheduled for 6pm AKT, while Saturday is slated for 1pm AKT.
