FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Led by redshirt-sophomore outside hitter
Markie Miller's 18 kills, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team edged the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in a five-set thriller at the Alaska Airlines Court.
The Nooks went 25-18, 14-25, 25-16, 20-25 and 15-9 against the Yellowjackets to improve to 9-10 on the season and 7-5 in conference play, while MSUB drops to 9-11 overall and 3-8 in league matches.
Furthermore, the victory marks Alaska's sixth-straight conference victory, a feat they have not reached since joining the GNAC in 2001, until Thursday. It also marks the most GNAC wins within a single season for head coach
Brian Scott since taking over the program in 2015.
"I think I was more anxious entering this game than I was Tuesday's match because, I think, when you play this many games in such a short amount of time, it's a lot," Scott said on Thursday. "I'm so proud of these girls and how they dealt with adversity. We had middles playing defense and passing the ball, it was great. It was a collective team effort and that's what I love about this group. Any one person on this team can go off at any one time and we're making it hard to play against us."
Four Nanooks registered double-digit kills on Thursday night, led by Miller with 18. Miller only posted eight errors off of 43 attempts for a .233 hitting percentage. The Brewster, Washington native also chipped in six digs, one ace, one assist and one block assist for a match-high 19.5 points.
Following closely behind Miller was sophomore outside hitter
Lahra Weber, who picked up 17 kills against the Yellowjackets. Weber was one dig short of a double-double with nine, while also collecting one solo block, one block assist and two aces for 18.5 points.
Junior middle blocker
Kim Wong and junior right side
Mica Shenglan were close behind with 10 kills apiece. Wong shine at the net with four solo blocks, while Shenglan registered her first double-double of the season with her 10 kills and 13 digs. Shenglan also posted the best hitting percentage of the team with a .364.
Sophomore setter
Cate Whiting posted a career-best night on Thursday, collecting 56 assists. Also of note, sophomore middle blocker
Emily Moorhead was a force at the net, posting two solo blocks and two block assists, while also adding eight digs, seven kills and two aces.
Freshman libero
Makena Overbey led the charge defensively with a team-best 18 digs.
