SAN FRANCISCO – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team defeated the Academy of Art 3-1 on Friday morning, going 25-19, 25-17, 21-25 and 26-24 over the Urban Knights in the second day of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase at the Swamp on the San Francisco State University campus.
The victory moves the Nanooks to a 6-2 overall record on the season, doubling their wins from 2016 and tying head coach
Brian Scott's single-season win record from 2015. Furthermore, Alaska became the first Great Northwest Athletic Conference team to win two games at the showcase.
"We did what we set out to do today; we passed the ball well and that allowed our offense to run," Scott said on Friday. "That has been something we've been trying to improve upon and it's been key in our game plans thus far, if we can pass the ball and set up our offense correctly, we are going to be a tough team to stop."
Sophomore outside hitter
Gabby Lerma had another outstanding day for the Nanooks, as the Mission, Texas native was one of three players and the only Nanook to register a double-double on the day. Lerma tallied 14 kills and 11 digs for her first career double-double wearing the Blue and Gold. Lerma went 14-of-29 in total attempts with only four errors for a hitting percentage of .345, the highest of any player on the court. Lerma also chipped in two assists, one service ace and one block assist for a team-high of 15.5 points.
Following Lerma's offensive lead, freshman
Lahra Weber and redshirt-senior
Maddie Davis also posted double-digit kills on Friday, as Weber tallied 13 while Davis totaled 11. Freshman setter
Cate Whiting posted a career-high 26 assists, while senior setter
Rachel Nichols picked up 24 herself.
Besides Lerma, only sophomore libero
Jenna Hickel collected double-digit digs, as the Anchorage native collected 17. As a team, the Nooks picked up 60 digs on the day.
In a game that saw 12 tie scores and seven lead changes through four sets, Alaska outhit their opponents with 60 kills to the Urban Knights' 51. The Nooks finished the game with a team hitting percentage of .247 while the Academy of Art combined for a .230 average. The second set proved to be the best hitting set for the Nanooks, as Alaska collected 18 kills and only three errors off of 37 total attempts, giving them a .405 team hitting percentage.
The Academy of Art were led by Bailey Soolsma (20 kills, 19 digs) and Kimiah Johnson (11 kills, 13 digs), who both earned double-doubles on the day.
"That's a good, solid team in the Academy of Art," Brian concluded. "They were so good defensively, I mean, they outdid us in digs but we found a way to kept putting the ball down."
The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team will close out the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase with a match against Biola University tomorrow (Saturday), Sept. 9 at 8:30am AKT. All games for the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase take place at the Swamp on the SFSU campus.
