Gold Proves Victorious in @NanooksHockey Scrimmage

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A pair of multi-point nights from senior defenseman Justin Woods, sophomore Aaron Herdt and freshman Max Newton led the Gold Team to a 4-2 victory on Saturday night, as the Alaska Nanooks hockey team hosted their annual Blue vs. Gold game at the Patty Center Ice Arena.

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team was split into two on Saturday night, with the Gold Team consisting of Nikolas Koberstein, Woods, Danny Kiraly, Austin Vieth, Tayler Munson, Max Newton, Chad Staley, Ryker Leer, James LaDouce, Aaron Herdt, Tyler Cline and Kyle Marino. The Blue Team was made up of Zach Frye, Justin Young, Steven Jandric, Nick Hinz, Brennan Blaszczak, Troy Van Tetering, Kyle Froese, Jack Weiss, Colton Leiter, Kylar Hope, Tristan Thompson and Ross Heidt.

The guest coaches for Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage was Staff Sergeant Brian Worster, Sergeant Ryan Clare, assistant men's basketball coach Bobby Howard and head women's basketball coach Brett Sawyer. The special guest for Saturday's game was Lieutenant Garrick Cramer, 25th Brogade Battalion Commander.

Both Herdt and Woods tallied a goal and an assist on the night, while Newton collected two assists. Junior forward Chad Staley and sophomore forward Tyler Cline also chipped in goals for the Gold Team.

Herdt started the scoring in the first 25-minute half, capitalizing on a breakaway to put the Gold Team on the board first at the 2:54 mark. Herdt's goal was assisted by senior forward and Fairbanks native Tayler Munson.

Sophomore forward Colton Leiter tied the game at 1-1 almost eight minutes later after catching sophomore goaltender Anton Martinsson off of his post for a weak-side goal. Leiter's goal was unassisted at the 9:24 mark of the first half.

Hope's tally 1:07 into the second half was the last goal for the Blue Team on the night, as Hope picked up a turnover behind the Gold Team net before stuffing the puck behind freshman goaltender Tony Rehm.

In a matter of eight minutes, the Gold Team saw goals from Staley (Newton, Herdt), Woods (Newton, Kiraly) and Cline (Woods) to seal the victory at 4-2.

The Gold Team outshot their opponents 22-17 with Rehm and sophomore goaltender Niko DellaMaggiore tying for a game-high 13 saves.

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team hosts Simon Fraser in an exhibition game at the Carlson Center next Friday, Sept. 29. Puck-drop is slated for 7:07pm AKT.
