@NanooksHockey Downs Simon Fraser 6-0 in Exhibition

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Six different Nooks registered a goal on Friday night, as the Alaska Nanooks hockey team defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan 6-0 in an exhibition match-up at the Carlson Center.

"I'm happy with how we played tonight," head coach Lance West said on Friday. "I thought everyone played with a good pace and had some good jump in their game. For the most part, I thought we managed the puck well, getting pucks behind their defensemen. Obviously there's still some work that needs to be done, we definitely need to tighten up our defensive-zone and calm down when we don't have the puck."

Despite dominating in puck-possession, the Nanooks were only leading the Clan 1-0 after the first period. Alaska's offense picked it up in the remaining 40 minutes of play, combining for five goals and outshooting their opponent 53-20 on the night. Alaska saw three different skaters tally multi-point nights, including senior defenseman Zach Frye (one goal, one assist), rookie forward Steven Jandric (one goal, one assist) and sophomore forward Colton Leiter (two assists).

Each of Alaska's three goaltenders made an appearance in net, as sophomore Anton Martinsson, sophomore Niko DellaMaggiore and freshman Tony Rehm each played 20 minutes against the Clan. Martinsson combined for six saves in the first while Rehm registered five in the third period but it was DellaMaggiore's second period nine-save effort that led Alaska between the pipes.

On the other end of the ice, SFU's goaltender Lyndon Stanwood totaled a game-high of 47 saves.

Sophomore forward Tyler Cline put Alaska on the board first, scoring with one second left in the first period to break the stalemate and send Alaska into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Frye made a backhanded pass in front of the net which Cline was able to bury while fending off a SFU defender.

Redshirt-senior defenseman and captain Justin Woods made it a 2-0 game at the 6:36 mark of the second after creeping in backdoor and sniping high-blocker side. Woods received a clean feed from Jandric in the corner before notching his first unofficial goal of the season in front of his hometown while sophomore forward Kylar Hope was awarded the secondary assist.

Six minutes later, Jandric scored a goal of his own after entering the zone and trying to send a pass through the slot to Leiter, who was crashing the net. Jandric's pass went off a SFU defender and caught Stanwood off guard to make it a 3-0 game. Jandric's goal was assisted by Leiter and sophomore defenseman Tristan Thompson.

The floodgates opened in the third period, as sophomore forward Troy Van Tetering, Frye and sophomore forward Kyle Marino each produced a goal in the final 20 minutes to seal the 6-0 victory.

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team hosts a two-game non-conference series against the United States Air Force Academy next Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Carlson Center. The Nooks will need to bring their A-game, as the AFA is fresh off of an appearance at the 2016 NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament last April. Puck-drop is slated for 7:07pm AKDT on both nights.
