SEWARD, Alaska – On Tuesday, a handful of current and former Alaska Nanook cross country runners participated in the 102nd Mount Marathon race in Seward, led by former Nook Kenny Brewer, who placed third overall.
The legendary Alaskan race is a 3.1 to a 3.5 mile uphill run (depending on the route) on Mt. Marathon where racers make a 3,022 elevation gain. The Mount Marathon race is ran every July 4th in Seward and originated in 1915.
Brewer completed the race in 00:46:53, ranking third overall and second in the men's 18-29 age division. Brewer's time was only 1:31 behind second place Erik Johnson (00:45:22) and 2:33 behind first place overall Scott Patterson's time (00:44:30). Brewer's personal-best Mount Marathon time of 00:46:31 still ranks ninth on the men's all-time leaderboard for the race.
Incoming senior
Alexander Eckert placed fourth overall and third in his age division with a time of 00:47:18, while fellow classmate
Lyon Kopsack crossed the finish line with a time of 00:50:25 to place 18h overall. Kopsack still holds the sixth-best time on the men's all-time leaderboard with a finishing time of 00:45:39. Rounding out the Nooks was former cross country runner and Nordic skier Isaac Lammers, who placed 37th overall with a time of 00:54:13.
Junior-to-be
Jocelyn Kopsack was the only current or former Nanook to race on Tuesday, boasting a total time of 1:05:56 to place 32nd overall in the women's division and 20th in the women's 18-29 year old age division.
Soldotna native and Boise State sophomore Allie Ostrander won the women's division of the Mount Marathon race, crossing the finish line with a time of 00:49:19 to post the second-best women's time in history.
