Big Second Half Fuels @NanooksWBB over St. Martin’s, 56-41

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Jordan Wilson scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high four rebounds to lead the Alaska women's basketball team over Saint Martin's, 56-41, Saturday afternoon on Senior Night at the Patty Center.

Alaska (13-12, 9-9 GNAC) entered the game in a fifth-place tie with Northwest Nazarene and one game ahead of seventh-place Concordia. The Nanooks control of their own destiny as they work towards securing their first GNAC Championship appearance.

Wilson was one of six seniors honored before the game, playing in their final home game. She reflected on how the program's success has grown over the past few seasons and potentially reaching the postseason, "Coming in as freshmen this is somewhere we wanted to take the program. To be in a spot where we have that opportunity (now) is pretty special."

The senior point guard's 13 field goals over the last two games allowed her to become the all-time leader in career field goals made in GNAC history, with 689 total field goals.

Alaska head coach Cody Bench offered her feelings on what the seniors have created while on the team, "What the last four years has meant has been very special, just building on year after year from all the hard work."

Saint Martin's (5-21, 1-17 GNAC) lead on multiple occasions throughout the first quarter, including a 16-12 advantage a minute into the second.

The Nanooks controlled the game afterwards, outscoring SMU 19-5 in the third quarter and using a 32-9 run to lead 44-27 entering the final frame.

Defensive pressure was the difference in the game. Alaska used an 11-1 advantage in steals to take control.

Freshman Lexi Carpenter tallied 14 points off the bench, scoring double digits for the second straight game.

Mercedes Victor and Elin Johansson both eclipsed double figures for the Saints. Victor scored a team-high 16 points, while Johansson posted 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Nanooks will wrap up the regular season next week against two teams that have already clinched a berth in the GNAC Championships. Alaska travels to Simon Fraser on Thurdsday, Feb. 23 and then to Western Washington on Saturday, Feb. 25.
