BURNABY, British Columbia – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit within the last minute of play to send Thursday's Great Northwest Athletic Conference game into overtime before falling victim to a buzzer-beater shot by the Simon Fraser Clan at the 00:00.3 mark of the fourth quarter to lose 73-71. The Nanooks fall to 13-13 overall on the season and 9-10 in conference play while the Clan improve to 24-5 overall and 15-4 in GNAC contests.
In a game that saw 13 tied scores and 10 lead changes, the first ten minutes of play only saw a lead go up to four points or less. The trend continues throughout the second quarter with the Clan slightly pulling away with a three-point shot with 23 seconds remaining in the second to take a 31-26 lead heading into the locker room at half.
With the Clan holding on to their lead throughout the entire third quarter, Alaska finally reclaimed the lead with a good three-point shot by senior guard Jaylee Mays at the 7:04 mark of the fourth quarter to make it a 56-55 game. The Nanooks held on to the lead until the four-minute mark before the Clan answered back with a six-point run. Within the last minute alone, Mays made two good three-point shots before getting fouled on her third attempt at the 23 second mark. Mays converted on all three free throws to tie the game 71-71 before SFU's Meg Wilson capitalized on a good jump-shot with less than a second to play to take the game 73-71.
Senior forward Kaillee Skjold posted a game-high 18 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line in her 36 minutes on the court. Skjold also chipped in seven rebounds and tied the team-high for assists with fellow senior Victoria Milton, each producing four.
Fellow senior forward Jordan Wilson followed-up Skjold's performance with a 17-point night, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor and collecting each of her three free throw attempts. Wilson also tallied four rebounds and three assists in a game-high 38 minutes on the floor.
Mays was the only other Nanook to record double-digit points, shooting 3-of-7 from three-point territory and going 3-of-3 from the free throw line to collect a 12-point night, while also picking up three rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard Autumn Childers was the only Alaska to post any steals against the Clan, registering two.
Alaska shot 45.6 percent from the field (26-of-57), 50 percent from behind the arc (7-of-14) and 92.3 percent from the free throw line (12-of-13). Alaska posted 31 rebounds and 17 assists while also receiving 24 points in the paint, 16 points from their bench and 14 points off of SFU turnovers.
Simon Fraser was led by Ellen Kett, who shot 6-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to post 16 points for the Clan.
In order to keep their playoff hopes alive, Alaska must win Saturday's game against Western Washington in Bellingham. Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm AKST.
