FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to Lake Superior State in 3-on-3 double overtime, earning a point in the WCHA standings on Saturday at the Carlson Center.
The Nanooks (10-18-4, 9-13-4 WCHA) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first period, but Lake Superior State (11-15-6, 8-12-6 WCHA) rallied with a pair of goals to tie the game up in the third.
Both teams skated through the first overtime unscathed, resulting in a 3-3 tie in the NCAA standings. Luke Morgan gave Lake Superior State an additional WCHA point when he scored on the backhand over the glove of
Davis Jones with 2:31 on the game clock. Morgan skated from the corner and found open ice in the slot.
Senior
Davis Jones (5-9-3) recorded 39 saves on 42 shots in the tie. Gordon Defiel (11-13-6) registered 24 stops on 27 shots for the Lakers.
Josh Erickson scored three minutes into the game on senior night.
Justin Woods followed five minutes later with an assist from
Kylar Hope. Hope secured his first collegiate point the night before.
Lake Superior cut into the lead when J.T. Henke recorded his 10th goal of the season less than two minutes later. UAF's
Tyler Cline answered with a tally of his own before first intermission.
The Lakers come in waves during the third period, outshooting the Nanooks 19-8. Max Humitz found the scoresheet when he wheeled a shot from the circle 1:51 into the final period.
Davis Jones made save after to save to keep his team in the lead. He and the Nanooks fought off a 5 minute-major penalty for hitting from behind and a 5-on-3 penalty kill. A sequence of chances late in the period saw Jones make a great glove save while on his stomach.
LSSU finally broke through when Anthony Nellis rifled a shot over the glove hand in the slot off a faceoff win by J.T. Henke. Â Â Â
UAF went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Lake Superior State was held scoreless on their four opportunities. Both teams went scoreless on the man advantage in the series.
With the tie, Alaska maintains its sixth-place position in the WCHA standings, while Lake Superior maintains seventh place. The Nanooks are now four points clear of ninth-place Alabama Huntsville with two games left.
Alaska will wrap up the regular season next weekend in Anchorage for the second half of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup, Feb. 24-25. Times for both games are 7:07 p.m. AKST.
