Van Tetering's Game-Winner Lifts @NanooksHockey to 4-3 Victory over UAA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Seven different Alaska Hockey skaters found their way on the scoresheet on Friday night, as the Nanooks defeated their in-state rival the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves 4-3 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. Freshman forward Troy Van Tetering tallied a goal and an assist on Friday, including the game-winner, while redshirt-junior Justin Woods posted two assists to help the Nooks to victory.

The win improves Alaska's overall record to 11-18-4 and 10-13-4 in WCHA contests, while the Seawolves fall to 7-20-6 overall and 6-15-6 in league play. Friday's game also counted toward the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup standings, with the Nanooks now holding a 2-1 advantage over their rival.

Prior to Friday's puck-drop, the Alaska Nanooks hockey team clinched a spot in the first round of the 2017 WCHA Tournament following the conclusion of other games around the league. With the Nanooks' win against Anchorage, the Seawolves are now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

In a game that featured multiple shifts in momentum and exemplified the importance of net-presence, five of the game's combined seven goals were scored within a 2:05 timeframe. Sophomore goaltender Jesse Jenks, who made his first appearance in net in 10 games, collected 17 saves on the night, while UAA's junior goaltender Olivier Mantha posted 20 saves against the Nanooks.

"This was the type of game we expected to be in tonight. There was plenty of momentum changes and emotion in the game," head coach Dallas Ferguson said on Friday night following the win. "It's the type of game you have to keep grinding and playing for the next shift."

Freshman forward Tyler Cline opened up the combined five-goal first period on Friday night, tallying a power play goal at the 8:23 mark of the first period to give the Nooks a 1-0 lead. After a fumbled clear in the Seawolf zone, Cline picked up a bouncing puck toward the blue line and cut to the middle after walking off the wall. Cline used the UAA defenseman as a screen and fired a wrist shot on goal to beat Mantha stick-side for his fourth goal of the season.

Almost 10 minutes later, freshman forward Ross Heidt scored his sixth goal of the season at the 17:54 mark to make it a 2-0 game. While in the Seawolf zone, Van Tetering dished the puck to Woods, who was alone along the blue line. Woods released a clapper that found the stick of Heidt, who was standing along the backdoor, for a tip-in past Mantha.

In a whirlwind final 1:42 of the first period, UAA's Jarrett Brown pulled the Seawolves to within one when he beat a screened Jenks off of a wrist from the top of the circle short-side. Brown's goal came 16 seconds after Heidt's and was assisted by Dylan Hubbs and Alex Jackstadt.

Thirty-eight seconds later, UAA's Mason Mitchell tied the game at 2-2 at the 18:58 mark of the first period for his 11th goal of the season. Mitchell intercepted a shot on goal from his teammate Brown, before stuffing the puck past the pad of Jenks. Alaska Anchorage's Brown and Tad Kozun were awarded the assists on Mitchell's goal.

And exactly 38 seconds after Mitchell's goal, Alaska struck once more with an even-strength tally from junior forward Austin Vieth. Vieth's goal came at the 19:36 mark of the first period to give Alaska a 3-2 lead going into the first intermission. Sophomore forward Ryker Leer passed the puck to Woods, who was rushing up-ice to create a 2-on-1 odd-man rush with Vieth. Woods faked a shot before passing over to Vieth, who was crashing the net on the backdoor, before fighting off the UAA defender and getting a stick on Woods' pass to regain the Alaska lead.

The craziness continued into the second period, as UAA's Mitchell scored his second goal of the game only 23 seconds in. A tough forecheck from the Seawolves caused a failed breakout behind Jenks, catching the Nanooks out of defensive positioning. Alaska Anchorage's Anholt threaded the puck through the Nanook slot to find Mitchell backdoor, with Kozun given the secondary assist.

The second period concluded without any other goals from either team, entering the second intermission tied at three-apiece.

Van Tetering gave Alaska their final lead of the night, as the Carstairs, Alberta native scored the game-winning goal at the 13:34 mark of the third period. After killing holding on to the momentum of killing a bid third period penalty, senior forward Brandon Morley was floating high in the Seawolf zone before capturing a loose puck on a failed Seawolf breakout. Morley skated through three UAA defenders drawing the pressure over to his side of the ice before throwing a tape-to-tape pass to Van Tetering, who was alone on the weak side.

"It was good to get scoring from all four lines tonight. Brandon made a very good play on Troy's goal, showing really good patience, and Troy had a nice, quick release," Ferguson concluded. "We found a way to win tonight but we know we will need to find another level to be successful tomorrow."

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will return to the Sullivan Arena again tomorrow (Saturday), Feb. 25 to take on their in-state rival Alaska Anchorage once more in the 2016-17 regular season finale. With the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup on the line, puck-drop is slated for 7:07pm AKST.
