PORTLAND, Ore. – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team earned their second-straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory on Sunday night, as the Nooks defeated the Concordia Cavaliers 81-66 at the LCEF Court. The victory improves Alaska's overall record to 4-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Cavaliers drop to 4-7 on the year and 0-3 in league contests.
"Tonight was a great GNAC road win for us tonight, we shot really well particularly in the second half," head coach
Mick Durham said on Sunday. "We knew that starting out the league play with three out of our four games being on the road would test us but it's a good breakthrough with this new team."
Sophomore forward
Michael Kluting posted a career night against the Cavaliers, tallying a personal-best 23 points and tying his career-best rebounds with 10. Kluting's performance on Sunday marks his fourth career double-double. The Palmer, Alaska native went 7-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc and 6-for-7 from the free throw line while also chipping in three steals and two assists in 29 minutes on the court.
Junior guard
Davis Kimble was the only other Nanook to register double-digit figures, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 1-for-4 from three-point range to collect 17 points for the Nooks. Kimble also tallied a game- and career-best eight assists on the night, while also chipping in two steals and one block in 27 minutes on the court.
As a team, the Nanooks shot 53.7 percent from the field (29-for-54), 40.7 percent from behind the arc (11-for-27) and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (12-for-18). Alaska also collected 10 offensive and 22 defensive boards for 32 rebounds, while also recording 15 assists, seven assists and one block.
The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team is back in GNAC action on Tuesday, Dec. 19 in Monmouth, Oregon, as they take on the Western Oregon Wolves at 6pm AKST.
