FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Senior guard
Cassi Williams broke and reset a new Alaska Nanooks women's basketball record in three-point field goals-made by a single player on Saturday night, as the Nooks cruised to a 90-42 victory over the Multnomah University Lions at the Alaska Airlines Court. The nonconference win improves Alaska's overall record to 3-5 (0-0 GNAC), while the Lions drop to 0-12 on the season (0-4 CCC).
Williams connected on nine three-point shots against the Lions to mark the most of any Alaska Nanooks women's basketball player in program history. The previous record of seven three-point field goals-made in a game was held by Amy Woodruff against Humboldt in the 2000-01 season. The Klawock, Alaska native is now tied for first in the nation for the same category with Courtney Fields from Texas A&M-Commerce, who went 9-for-10 from behind the arc on Nov. 22. In the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time record book, Williams will now sit tied for second in single-game three-pointers-made, as the current league record is 12 from Simon Fraser's Elisa Horner last season.
Williams ended the night shooting 10-for-14 from the floor, including 9-for-13 from three-point range to register a career-best 29 points. Williams also chipped in four rebounds and 13 assists in 13 minutes on the court.
"Tonight was a fun game, it was nice to get everyone on the team on the court and scoring some points," head coach
Brett Sawyer said on Saturday. "Cassi really shot the ball well, its great to see her do well as she's someone who works really hard day-in and day-out."
Besides Williams, two other Nanooks scored double-digit figures on Saturday night with sophomore guard
Lexi Carpenter tallying 11 points while junior forward
Angela Murnion recorded 10. Carpenter shot 5-for-10 from the field, including 1-for-4 from behind the arc, while Murnion went 3-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-4 at the free throw line.
Three other Nanooks posted career-best nights against Multnomah, as sophomore guard
Sabrina Ungaro (7 points), redshirt-freshman forward
Markie Miller (4 points) and freshman forward
Samantha Saccomen (2 points) each scored career-high numbers. Ungaro led all players in assists with six, while junior forwards
Ashlie Blackburn and
Sanni Salonen pulled down a game-high seven rebounds apiece.
As a team, the Nooks shot 57.4 percent from the floor (35-for-61), 58.3 percent from three-point range (14-for-24) and 75 percent from the free throw line (6-for-8). Alaska also totaled 41 rebounds, including 12 offensive and 29 defensive boards, 23 assists and 12 steals.
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will face the Multnomah Lions in another nonconference matchup tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 17) at the Alaska Airlines Court with tip-off scheduled for 3pm AKST.
