FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team collected their second-straight victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Multnomah University Lions 70-31 in a nonconference contest at the Alaska Airlines Court. The Nanooks improve to 4-5 overall on the season (0-3 GNAC), while the Lions fall to 0-13 on the year (0-3 CCC).
"Overall, I'm really happy with the outcome of the games but I'm a little frustrated in certain aspects," head coach
Brett Sawyer said on Sunday. "I thought they were a little sluggish in the second and third quarter and I get that it can be tough to maintain a certain type of intensity through a full 40 minutes, especially since we were running a bunch of different lineups."
Alaska's defense put on another display on Sunday, keeping Multnomah's scoring to only single digits in three of the four quarters. The Nanooks capitalized on the Lions' 17 turnovers, collecting nine steals and 18 points off of turnovers.
As a team, the Nanooks shot 39.1 percent from the floor (25-of-64), 40.0 percent from behind the arc (10-for-25) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (10-for-13). Alaska also collected 15 offensive and 34 defensive boards for 49 rebounds and 18 assists.
The Nooks were led by junior forward
Angela Murnion, who shot 7-for-11 from the floor, including 5-for-8 from three-points range to tally a career-best 19 points against the Lions. Murnion also added three assists, three steals and one rebound in 23 minutes on the court.
Sophomore
Lexi Carpenter registered 10 points against Multnomah for her third-straight game scoring double-digit figures, going 4-for-10 from the field and 2-for-5 from behind the arc.
Sophomore forward
Brittany Richards was a force around the net, pulling down two offensive and seven defensive boards to tally a career-best nine rebounds, leading the Nanooks. Sophomore guard
Sabrina Ungaro led all players with five assists on the day.
"I don't know if I learned anything about our team from this weekend's games, but we definitely got better," Sawyer continued. "We definitely executed our timing and spacing but I think it was a great way to end the first half of the season and go into break."
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will enjoy the holiday break before resuming Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Friday, Dec. 29, as they travel to Bellingham, Washington to take on the Western Washington Vikings at 6pm AKST.
