#5 @NanooksRifle Posts Victory in Season-Opening Match

FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
The No. 5-ranked Alaska Nanooks men's and women's rifle team opened the 2017-18 season on a high note, as the Nanooks posted a team aggregate score of 4694 to defeat the No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 6 Air Force Falcons at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen's Association on Friday. Alaska was led by senior Luke Johnson, who posted a record day to become the top individual shooter on the day.

Alaska posted a match-best 2374 in air rifle and tied Ohio State for a match-best smallbore score of 2320 to register a team aggregate of 4694. Ohio State came in second in the three-team match, posting an aggregate total of 4675 (2320 smallbore, 2355 air rifle), while Air Force placed third with a combined total of 4640 (2300 smallbore, 2340 air rifle).

Individually, Johnson posted a career-best air rifle score of 597 and a smallbore score of 584 to tally a career-best aggregate score of 1181, one point better than his former personal-best record of 1180. Johnson's air rifle score was the best amongst all shooters on Friday, while his smallbore score placed him second behind Ohio State's Jacob Buchanan, who registered a 585.

In total, the Nanooks had five shooters place within the top-10 individually in Friday's match, including redshirt-senior Sagen Maddalena, freshman Spencer Jacobs, junior JT Schnering and junior Robert Scott.

Maddalena, who was recently named the team's co-captain for the third-straight year, tallied a 583 smallbore and a 597 air rifle score to place second overall individually with a an aggregate total of 1180.

In his collegiate debut, Jacobs placed sixth individually with an aggregate total of 1170, shooting a 582 smallbore score and a 588 in air rifle. Schnering placed eighth individually with an aggregate score of 1168, while Scott closed out the top-10 individually with an aggregate tally of 1161.

The Nanooks return to their home range tomorrow (Saturday), Oct. 14 to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range at the Patty Center with the first relay getting underway at 8:15am AKT.
