Alaska Swimming Wins Against Azusa Pacific

FAIRBANKS – For the second straight day, the Alaska swimming team defeated Azusa Pacific by a score of 117-88. Again, the Nanooks won eight of the 11 events to claim the victory.

The meet started and ended on high notes as the 200 medley relay team of Victoria Adams, Nga Nguyen, Margot Adams and Martha Hood placed first with an overall time of 1:47.75. Then, in the 11th and final event the 200 freestyle relay team of Hood, V. Adams, Gabi Summers and Katie Stark took the top spot with a time of 1:39.04.

Stark would go on to win two more events as she placed first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle with respective times of 25.23 and 53.97.

Also adding individual wins were M. Adams, V. Adams, Nguyen and Danielle Lyons.

M. Adams won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:11.58 while V. Adams took the top spot in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.33.

Nguyen won the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.65 and Lyons claimed first in the 400 individual medley in 4:45.02.

"It was a good series for us. APU is a very good team and for a while today we thought they were going to make it closer," said head coach Scott Lemley. "We had our strongest events at the end - the 200 back and 200 breast and 200 free relay - and scored enough points to put the meet away."

After a successful weekend, Lemley praised his team's efforts in and out of the pool. "The past two days were successful because of a "total team effort" led by our co-captains, seniors Kelly Meierotto and Kendra Ashwell," explained the coach. "They've taken the strength work seriously from day one and I give a lot of credit to them for keeping out girls honest about their own efforts in the weight room."

The Alaska swimming team is idle from competitive races until the middle of November when it hosts California State East Bay over the weekend of Nov. 14-15.
