RUMFORD, Maine - Alaska Nanook freshman Logan Hanneman raced his way to an 11th place finish in the men's 15 kilometer freestyle event to lead the Blue and Gold on their second day of races at the U.S. Cross Country Skiing Championships at Black Mountain of Maine on Thursday.

Hanneman was the top junior (under 20 years old) by a minute, completing the course in 31:04.3. Although he was just 9.1 seconds shy of a top-ten finish, Hanneman successfully qualified for the World Junior Championships to be held in Turkey next month.

"Logan had an exceptional race today," said head coach Scott Jerome. "He started fast and and kept on the gas until the finish.  He suffered a little on the final lap and lost a bit of time, but overall it was a very, very good race."

Junior Tyler Kornfield was next to cross for Alaska, taking 33rd in 32:13.9, while senior Alex Morris followed in 56th and was clocked at 32:45.5.

"Tyler had a solid race, though he may have been a bit tired from his skate sprint on Tuesday," said Jerome. "Alex also performed very well. Over the past three years he has steadily improved with every race and I think this is a good sign of things to come as this was his best showing at US Nationals thus far in his career."

Rounding out the Alaska men were another Nanook freshman, Ludwig Schott, who came in 64th overall in 32:53.3, senior Ian Wilkinson (72nd, 33:04.7), senior Erik Soederstroem (76th, 33:08.30) and rookie Jonas Loeffler (127th, 34:49.00).

For the women's team, sophomore Raphaela Sieber led the way in 34th with a course time of 28:28.90.

"Raphaela is not at the same level as she was at this point last season, but she has improved significantly within the last six weeks," said Jerome. "I know 'Ela is hungry for the mass start classic event (tomorrow) since she tends to be a better classic skier."

Sophomore Heather Edic was next for the Nanooks, finishing 54th (29:01.90), and rookie Aly McPhetres was 65th (29:17.20).

"Heather was a bit tired but still posted a receptacle finish today," Jerome added.

First-year skier Heidi Brook and junior Crystal Pitney finished back-to-back in 73rd (29:28.00) and 72nd (29:28.60) and juniors Marit Rjabov and Rebecca Konieczny were 91st (29:57.50) and 116th (31:05.10), respectively.

The action continues tomorrow with the men's 30k and women's 20k classic technique mass start races.
