Nanooks Belted By Bellarmine In Four

The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team lost to the Bellarmine Knights 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 16-25) in session two of the Nanook Classic Saturday.

The Nanooks used a .286 hitting percentage to capture a slim victory in set one, but it was all Knights after that. The team was outmatched worst in the final set, where they finished with a flat .000 percentage (nine kills, nine errors).

Tereza Bendlova led the Nanooks with 16 kills but was responsible for five of the errors in the final set. Marybeth Wikander followed with nine kills and Erica Gage with eight.

The team totaled just 48 kills on 140 total attacks for a .157 percentage.

Jordyn Montgomery led the defense with 13 digs. Jennifer Holland finished with 10.

Julie Gilhuly made her first start of the season after being used off the bench in the Nanooks' first four matches. She finished with six kills and an assist on offense and a dig and a block assist on defense.

Earlier in the day, Cal State East Bay beat Charleston 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 30-28) to improve to 2-0 in the tournament. They will close the tournament down when they face the Nanooks Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Session three opens at 6 p.m. when Bellarmine plays Charleston for third place.
