Despite a 25-21 win in set one, the Alaska Nanooks were unable to overtake first-place Western Washington Thursday. The Nanooks lost 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 19-25), and the Vikings headed home still undefeated in conference play.
The Nanooks rallied back from 10-17 in set one on the strength of a six-point run that included two blocks and a kill by
Erica Gage. They closed the set on five unanswered points, including kills from
Simone Chavous and
Karlee Skalla.
The Nanooks led just once in the second set at 8-7, but the Vikings took control and set the momentum in place to roll to a win.
Tereza Bendlova recorded a match-high 19 kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Chavous and
Marybeth Wikander each contributed seven kills.
Jordyn Montgomery led the defense with 13 blocks.
Jennifer Holland added another 11.
Erica Gage finished with five blocks. Wikander, Bendlova and Skalla each finished with three.
Marlayna Geary led the Vikings with 15 kills. On defense, Allison Gotz reached a match-high 15 digs, and Bailey Jones led with six blocks.
With the loss, the Nanooks fall to 4-6 (2-2 GNAC). They host conference newcomers Simon Fraser Saturday at 7 p.m. Inductees of the 2010 Nanook Hall of Fame class will be in attendance to meet fans and celebrate their own accomplishments at Alaska.
