FAIRBANKS, AK - The No. 13/17 Alaska Nanooks will face off against the No. 2/3 Boston College Eagles iin their first ever NCAA Tournament game at the 2010 Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass., this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time (9:30 a.m. ADT). Here are the need to know notes about the Boston College game and Alaska Hockey:
• The 2009-10 version of the Alaska Hockey team made program history on Sunday, Mar. 21, as they earned their first appearance in the NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament, drawing the 13th seed overall and fourth seed in the Northeast Regional. They drew the regional's No. 1 seed Boston College for their tournament debut and are looking to capture the program's first NCAA tournament win.
• Saturday afternoon, Alaska will face off against Boston College for the first time in 30 years of NCAA hockey history. They are 4-14-1 all-time against Hockey East teams.
• The Nanooks trip to Worcester, Mass., for the Northeast Regional is the farthest East the program has traveled for a game since the 1993-94 season. Head coach
Dallas Ferguson was a sophomore defenseman at the time and played in the two-game series at Elmira College (NY) on Nov. 5-6, 1993, when Alaska earned a 5-5 tie and an 11-2 victory.
• Alaska is 17-25 all-time in postseason play, which includes a 9-16 record when playing on the road and a 2-4 mark in games played on neutral turf.
• The Nanooks had two NCAA Division II Hockey Tournament appearances prior to becoming a Division I member during the 1984-85 season. They made it to the quarterfinals of the 1982-83 DII tournament where they lost to St. Thomas College (MN), and then made it to the tournament semi-finals the following season before falling to Bemidji State.
• Head coach
Dallas Ferguson has compiled a 35-27-15 record during his first two years behind Alaska's bench. He is just the third coach in program history to put together back-to-back winning seasons in the first two years as head coach.
• With an 18-11-9 overall mark this season, the Nanooks have compiled their sixth winning season of the past decade.
• Despite sitting out of the CCHA Championship tournament, freshman
Andy Taranto is first among CCHA rookies offensively and third among DI freshmen with 17 goals and 24 assists (41 points) in 38 games played.
• The Northern-most program in DI hockey, Alaska has wracked up 45,494 frequent flier miles this season.
