V-Ball Breaks Losing Streak With a Sweep Over CWU, 3-0

The Alaska volleyball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) over Central Washington at home Saturday night.

Simone Chavous led the Nanook attack with 12 kills, but the team relied as much on mistakes by Central Washington. Central Washington finished 25 attack errors, four service errors, four reception errors and three blocking errors.

The Nanooks broke away from a 14-11 lead in the first set with a four-point run capped by a kill from Chavous. Allison Oddy cemented the set win with a service ace.

They used three three-point runs to separate in the second set. Chavous again led with five kills.

The final set went back and forth until the Nanooks broke a 19-19 tie with a five-point run. Three of the five points came on Central Washington attack errors. The set ended on another pair of Wildcat errors.

Tereza Bendlova followed Chavous with nine kills. Mandy Grierson tallied two of the team's four service aces.

The defense was led by Chavous and Oddy, who each had nine digs. The team collected 15 total blocks. Grierson led with 10 assists. Erica Gage posted a block solo and nine assists.

The Nanooks host Anchorage next Saturday at 1 p.m.
