Spikers Crack Losing Streak, Top MSUB 3-1

[Box Score]

The Alaska volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 conference win (25-20, 25-23, 16-25, 25-18) over Montana State-Billings Saturday. The win claims a bit of vengeance for the Nanooks, who were defeated 3-1 in Billings in September.

Alaska found a steady barrage of offense and controlled the match from set one. Simone Chavous continued to be a force for the Nanooks and led the team with 15 kills, while Marybeth Wikander raised her hitting percentage with a .308 clip on the night. She entered the game ranked eighth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

In fact, the only lull in the Nanook attack came in set three when they surrendered to a late seven-point run by the Yellowjackets.

The team re-established itself in set four, including four separate runs of four unanswered points or better. Chavous notched four kills in that final set, and the Nanooks recorded a win.

Erica Gage and Tereza Bendlova each finished with 11 kills on offense. Bendlova entered the game ranked third in the GNAC in kills.

Bendlova also led the defense with 15 digs. Wikander tallied three block assists, and Gage added to her team-best blocks total with two more assists. She ranked fourth in the GNAC entering the contest.

The Nanooks travel to Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene next week before hosting their final two home matches against Western Oregon (Nov. 11) and Saint Martin's (Nov. 13).
