FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanook rifle team got off to a solid start Saturday, taking down the visiting University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in the team's first encounter of the weekend. The Nanooks 4,656 topped UTM's men team's 4,553 and their women's team score of 4,443.
Alaska posted a team air rifle score of 2,354 to beat the Skyhawk men by 49 points (2,305) and the women by 101 points (2,253). Leading the way for the Nanooks was rookie
Anna Hjelmevoll, who fired a 595. Sophomores
Dustin Chesebro (588) and
Cole Bures (587) were separated by just a point with the second and third best scores for Alaska, while senior
Cody Rutter (584) and sophomore
Aaron Holsopple (583) rounded out the scoring team.
Rookie
Ryan Dunham-Bender notched the second highest match point total in the air gun with a 590, while Michael Liuzza (579),
Ida Petersen (576),
Taylor Beard (575), and
Scott Franz (570) all participated in the match as individuals for the Blue and Gold.
In the smallbore, the five scoring Nanooks were Holsopple (581), Rutter (580), Bures (575), Chesebro (566) and Hjelmevoll (564).
Petersen registered the third highest smallbore score as an individual with 576, while Dunham-Bender and Franz tied for fifth (572), Liuzza was eighth (569), and Beard was 12th (562) out of 20 total shooters.
