Nanooks Late Rally Not Enough Against Falcons

FAIRBANKS, AK – The Alaska Nanooks dropped their second straight contest to No. 11 Seattle Pacific 88-68 in front of over 1,500 homecoming fans in Seattle, WA. Nashorn Maynard (Saint Paul's, Saint Kitts) picked up his fifth double-double as the Nanooks dropped to 6-10 overall, 1-6 in the GNAC.
 
Alaska trailed by as many at 19 in the opening 20 minutes of play but battled back to only trail  by 10 (43-33) going into the locker room. Maynard had a game-high 12 points and five rebounds at the halfway point as the Nanooks shot 52% (14-of-27) from the field, 4-of-5 from down town. Eight different Falcons found the score sheet in the half led by Ryan Sweet with eight points.
 
Alaska was able to close the gap to only eight with 6:38 left in the contest but Jeff Downs knocked down a three-pointer and two free throws that fueled an 8-0 run to put the Falcons up 73-62. 
 
Joe Powell (Englewood, NJ) came right back and put in a short shot from right in front of the hoop to get the Nanooks back within nine. Downs countered by draining a trey from the left of the lane, and then hit a pair of free throws which put the game out of reach at 83-64 with just 2:23 remaining.
 
Alaska finished the game shooting 47% (29-of-62) from the field, led by Maynard's 19 points. Maynard also led the game with 10 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive glass. Emmanuel Jenkins (Tacoma, WA) was the only other Nanook to score double-figures with 16 points and also dished out nine assists.
 
Seattle Pacific was led by Downs who scored 20 points and went 6-of-10 from three-point land. Sweet scored a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Falcons used 19 points off 13 Nanooks turnovers for the win.
 
The Nanooks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Billings, MT to take on Montana State Billings and start the second half of GNAC play. Tip off is set for 5:00 p.m. AST.
