LEXINGTON, KY - The top-ranked Alaska Nanooks rifle team continued to roll in 2010, taking down the No. 4 University of Kentucky Wildcats by a narrow seven-point margin with an aggregate score of 4656-4649 Tuesday at Barker Hall.
In their first smallbore match after a long Christmas break that head coach
Dan Jordan said "wasn't pretty by any means," the Nanooks managed to take care of business and got the job done. Fortunately for Alaska, Kentucky struggled in the same discipline, which kept the match close right to the end.
Leading the way for the Blue and Gold was junior
Cody Rutter, who shot a match-high 585, including a 197 from the kneeling position. Senior Billy Galligan's 576 was good for second followed by
Patrik Sartz's 573 and
Jace Bures 571.
In the air gun, Sartz led the way with a match high 594. Rookie
Dustin Chesebro was close behind with a 592, while Rutter and rookie
Scott Franz rounded out the scoring team with scores of 583 and 582, respectively.
The undefeated Nanooks (8-0) continue their road trip with a match at defending national champion and No. 2 West Virginia on Thursday. The match could prove to be an early indicator for NCAAs as the Mountaineers, who own the nation's best score of 4691 (shot on Nov. 21 against Kentucky), are also undefeated on the season (7-0).
"This was a good first match to get us going on the road trip," said Jordan. "Hopefully it will get their minds back on track and the feeling and touch in their positions so they are ready for WVU. It's going to be a tough match and they are going to have to be ready for it."
