FAIRBANKS, AK - In session two of the Auto Service Nanook Classic it was the same results as the night prior that saw the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo and the host Nanooks come out victorious.  It took the Vulcans five sets to defeat Rockhurst 3-2 and the Nanooks bounced back from a second game loss to down the Blue Knights 3-1.

In the first game the Vulcans took a quick 2-0 lead by the scores of 25-14 and 25-17 before dropping the next two contests to a resilient Rockhurst team 28-30 and 25-27.  The Vulcans were able to bounce back strong and take the fifth set 15-9 to capture victory.

Hawaii-Hilo was led by four different players with double digit kills which included Fabiane Seben (20), Josimara Pinheiro (19), Kawena Cubi-Otineru (15), and Morgan Bonney (10).  Pinheiro also picked up 19 digs and Lauren Tonokawa had ten digs for the Vulcans.  Katie Swenson led the way with 62 assists as the Vulcans hit .307 as a team in the five games.

The Nanooks came out for their second match and quickly took control as they build a 1-0 lead on a 25-15 victory over Urbana University.  Urbana would sneak a win in the second game by the score of 25-21 but Alaksa would run off two more victories (25-18 and 25-14) to close out the contest.

Six Nanook players had at least five kills, led by senior Jessica Hill (Colorado Springs, CO) who had 15.  “It is great to have options (to pass to),” said senior setter Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA), “it throws the other team off because they don't know where it is coming from and it defiantly helps us.”  Along with Hill, freshman Sydney Van Munster (Portland, MI) had 10 kills.

Sherman, who had 42 assists, also had a very strong game with ten digs and two kills to accompany her assits.  Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) once again led the Nanooks in digs with 15 and had three of the Nanooks 17 service aces.

The Nanooks won for the third straight time and will now face Hawaii-Hilo at 8:00 PM tonight for the chance to call themselves champions.  Head coach Phil Shoemaker knows the talent that will be on the other side but feels his team is ready.  “They have three go to players and they thrive on opponents errors.  They are a very good team.”

Before the Nanooks and Vulcan square off at eight Rockhurst will finish up their classic schedule when they play Urbana at 6:00 PM.
