Nanooks fall to Western Washington

The Alaska Nanooks took to the court Saturday night and dropped their second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest to Western Washington, 3-0.  The Nanooks lost the first set 18-25 before droppings the next two 22-25 and 21-25, respectively.

In the first set, the Nanooks fell behind 2-0, and tailed the rest of the game.  The Blue and Gold stayed in the match and pulled as near as two points until Western Washington went on a 5-0 run to build their lead to 23-16 before eventually closing it out.

The second set, which was the closest battle of the night, saw the Nanooks jump out to an early 3-0 lead spearheaded by a Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) and Erica Gage (Palo Alto, CA) kills.  Alaska and Western Washing battled back and forth until the Vikings went on another 5-0 run to make the score 20-15, before finishing of the set with a 25-22 victory.

The Blue and Gold then jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the third set before the Vikings took the lead for good at 5-4, on a Marlayna Geary kill.  Western Washington never trailed again and went on to win the set, and the match, 25-21.

The Nanooks were led by Megan Thigpen who had 11 kills while also contributing eight digs.  Melissa Refuerzo (Anchorage, AK) was the only other Nanook to reach double figures in kills with 10, while also notching 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.  Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) led Alaska in the back court with 16 digs and Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) had 26 assists in the loss.

As a team, the Nanooks were out hit .278 to .148 for the game and were also out blocked 10-2.

The Vikings were led by Marlayna Geary and Emily Jepsen who each had 10 kills while Allison Gotz had a team high 15 digs in the win.

The Vikings improve to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC with the win with the Nanook falling to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC.

Alaska will return to action on Thursday, October 1, when they will play host to Saint Martin's.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
