FAIRBANKS, AK - The Nanooks travel to Ellensburg, WA Thursday night and fell to Central Washington 3-2. The Blue and Gold fell behind, losing the first two games, before staging another comeback. The Nanooks clawed back to tie the contest at two before dropping the deciding fifth set.
Alaska dropped the first two sets 25-16 and 25-19 and then furiously battled back in the third set, breaking a 9-9 tie by going on a 9-2 run and cruise to a 25-22 win. The Nanooks then overcame a 13-9 deficit in the fourth set to tie the match at two. The comeback fell short in the fifth set when the Wild Cats jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and captured the fifth set 15-10.
The Nanooks were led by senior outside hitter
Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) who had a match-high 27 kills while also collecting 30 digs. Freshman
Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) led all players with 34 digs and
Heather Lyons (Anchorage, AK) had her second straight strong performance with a double-double (17 kills, 25 digs).
Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) assisted on 55 of Alaska's 71 kills.
Central Washington was led by Kady Try who had 18 kills and 21 digs while Kristel Baeckel also had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Devin Larson had 47 assists to aid to the win.
Central Washington improves to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC while the Nanooks fell to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC.
Alaska will continue play on Saturday when they travel to Western Washington for a 7 p.m. match.
