Nanooks defeat BYU-Hawaii 3-1

LAIE, HI – The Alaska Nanooks took control early, and often, as they bested BYU-Hawaii late Saturday night 3-1 in Laie, Hawaii to finish their Hawaii trip at 3-1. The Nanooks played strong with 61 team kills and rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to BYU-Hawaii to win the next three games.
 
After dropping game one 25-23 the Nanooks went to work. With the second game tied at  21-21 the Nanooks scored three straight points to defeat BYU-Hawaii and even the score. The Blue and Gold held a 20-10 lead and cruised to a 25-19 second game win before controlling the third game and going on a 5-1 run late to clinch the match with a 25-18 win.
 
Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) had the Nanooks best match of the season with a game high 25 kills and 23 digs. Thigpen was one of three Nanooks who had double-digit kills and one of four with double-digit digs. Freshman Sydney Van Munster (Portland, MI) had 11 kills and senior Jessica Hill (Colorado Springs, CO) chipped in 10 kills as the Nanooks hit .250 for the match.
 
Along with Thigpen's 23 digs, freshman Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) had 20 digs, Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) had 18 digs, and senior Heather Lyons had 16 digs. Sherman also had 47 of the Nanooks 54 assists in the match.
 
BYU-Hawaii was led by Tanza Buroker and Hannah Wilkinson each had nine kills and Keisha Moeai had a team high 17 digs. Roseanne Vea (14), Camille Soto (13), and Nobuko Kotoyori (10) also had double digit kills. Kotoyori also had 32 assists in the loss.
 
The Nanooks will return to action when they host Montana State-Billings on Thursday. The match will be the first of the GNAC schedule for the Nanooks. The match is set to start at 7:00 PM.
