Nanooks drop match to Hawaii-Hilo

Laie, HI - The Alaska Nanooks went into their third game of the Equus Challenge this afternoon and fell to Hawaii-Hilo 3-0. The Nanooks were trying to avenge their earlier loss in the Nanook Classic but could top the Vulcans in three very close match-ups. Hawaii-Hilo won their 10th straight match while the Nanooks had a two game win streak snapped.
 
The Nanooks dropped the first two games of the match by the scores of 25-23 and 21-25. The margin was never less than four in the first two games as the Nanooks tied the score at 23 in the first game before dropping the next two points. In the third game the Nanooks fell behind 7-0 early but battled back to within three at 23-19, but could not complete the comeback.
 
The Nanooks were led by senior Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) who was the only Nanook to reach double digits in kills with 11. Thigpen also had seven digs while freshman Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) led the way with ten digs. Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) had 25 assist and freshman Sydney Van Munster (Portland, MI) has six kills, and hit .857 in the game.
 
Hawaii-Hilo was led by three players with double-digit kills. Kawena Cubi-Otineru had a team high 12 kills and Josimara Pinheiro and Leilani Ramsey each had 10. Lauren Tonokawa picked up 11 digs and Katie Swenson had 37 assists in the win.
 
The Vulcans outhit the Nanooks .248 to .106. The Vulcans move to a perfect 10-0 on the season while Alaska moves to 4-5.
 
The Blue and Gold will finish up the Equus Challenge when they face BYU-Hawaii. The match is set for 9:30 PM AST. The Nanooks will then return home to Fairbanks and prepare for the GNAC schedule when they host Montana State-Billings on Thursday.
