Nanooks secure first victory of season

- In the final match of the SoCal Classic the Nanooks bucked the recent trend and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hill 3-0. The Nanooks controled all three of the games in route to their first victory of the season. The Blue and Gold took the first two sets by identical 25-17 scores before dropping the Toro's 25-19 in the third game.

The Nanooks (1-3) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game and never led by any less than two in the victory. Game two saw a closer contest as Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-3) took a 8-6 lead only to watch the Nanooks go on a 16-2 run before a Jessica Hill kill ended the game.

The Blue and Gold fell behind 4-1 in the third game of the match before asserting their dominance and going on a 9-3 run and eventually putting the third game away by the score of 25-19 to win their first match of the 2009-10 season.

Seniors Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) and Heather Lyons (Anchorage, AK) teamed up for 29 kills in the victory. Thigpen (17 kills) also had seven digs while Lyons (12 kills) had eight digs. Freshman Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) had another strong game for the Blue and Gold and had a team high 13 digs and also had four service aces. Senior Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) added 29 assists and also picked up six digs while Melissa Refuerzo (Anchorage, AK) had six digs.

For the Toro's, Marissa Anderson led the way with eight kills while Sara Murray had nine digs. Ashley Clark and Madison Horsley each had six digs and Rebekah Wolfgramm had 17 assists and seven service aces in the loss.

Head Coach Phil Shoemaker found the weekend to be a building block for his team. "Overall it was a good weekend with a lot of growth," he said, "we will use this to improve and we look forward to next weekend (Nanook Classic) and the rest of the season."

The Nanooks will return to action when they play host to the Auto Serice Co. Nanook Classic. The Classic will pit the Nanooks against the Urbana, Rockhurst, and Hawaii-Hilo. The tournament will start September 4 and finish September 5 before the Nanooks travel to Honolulu for the Hawaii Tournament.
