LOS ANGELES, CA - The Alaska Nanoonks went into their second contest of the SoCal Classis and fell to No. 20 Cal State Los Angeles 3-0. The Nanooks lost the three matches by the scores of 25-12, 26-24 and 25-22.
Senior setter
Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) led the way for the Nanooks posting a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs.
Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) contributed 11 kills while fellow senior
Heather Lyons (Anchorage, AK) and
Marybeth Wikander (Aloha, OR) had seven and six kills respectively. Thigpen also picked up nine digs and freshman
Allison Oddy had eight digs in the loss.
The Nanooks were put behind the eight ball early in the match when they fell behind 7-3 in the first game. The Blue and Gold were never able to recover and were on the wrong end of a 7-1 run to end the game.
Game two was a back and forth affair that saw the Nanooks take an early 11-8 lead before Cal State L.A. ran off six straight points to take a 14-11 lead. With the score 18-16, in favor of the host, the Eagles went to score the next five points before ending the match just moments later. The Blue and Gold never saw the lead in the third game. The Nanooks were able to tie the contest six different times but could not get over the hump in their loss.
The Eagles were sharp offensively with a .297 attack percent while having 11 service aces in the three games. Gabriela Bulawczyk led CSULA with 19 kills and eight digs. Kaylynne De La Rosa had 33 assists and five digs while Annie Kim had a team high 10 digs in the win.
The Nanooks will return to action tomorrow when they will play a double header against No. 2 Cal State Bernardino at noon and Cal State Dominguez Hills at six to wrap up their classic schedule.
