FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanooks took to the court in Anchorage on Wednesday night and fell in three sets to rival Alaska Anchorage 3-0. The Blue and Gold drop the contests 25-18, 25-23, and 25-22 to break their three game winning streak while getting out blocked 14-6 by the Seawolves.
The Nanooks dropped the first set 25-18 despite eight kills from senior
Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA). The first set saw nine ties in a tightly contested match. The Seawolves broke an 11-11 tie with three straight points and never gave up the lead. The Nanooks could only close the gap to two and saw the Seawolves score five of the last six points to claim the victory.
The Nanooks and Seawolves engaged in another tightly contested set in the second that had the Seawolves besting Alaska 25-23. The Nanooks took the early lead and lead by as many as five before Anchorage would battle back. After an Anchorage timeout the Seawolves turned a 13-8 deficit into a tie game at 15. The score went back and forth before Anchorage took the lead for good when they took a 24-23 lead before Stacie Meisner closed out the set with a service ace.
The Seawolves closed out the match with a 25-22 win in set three, and the series sweep over the Nanooks on the season. The Nanooks held an 18-14 lead before the host ran off an 11-4 run to end the match.
The win was the 10th in a row for the Seawolves and their seventh sweep during that streak. Anchorage is now 20-7 on the season and 12-2 in the GNAC, good for first place. The Nanooks dropped to 11-13 and 5-8 in the GNAC, having their three match win streak snapped.
The Seawolves outhit the Nanooks .248-.116 and forced Alaska into 39 errors, committing only 13 of their own.
The Nanooks were led by Thigpen with 14 kills and also added seven kills.
Jennifer Holland (Sterling, AK) collected 12 digs and
Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) had 30 assists in the loss.
Jackie Matthisen had 13 kills and seven digs to lead Alaska Anchorage while Stacie Meisner (15) and McKenzie Moss (10) each had double-digit digs. Calli Scott had a match high 33 assists along with five kills and four digs.
The Nanooks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Billings, MT to take on Montana State-Billings. The match is set to start at 5:00 p.m. AKT.
