No. 9 Alaska Ventures South For Two-Game Series With BGSU Falcons

FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanook hockey team has headed south for a two-week road trip to play at Bowling Green (Nov. 13-14) and Lake Superior State (Nov. 20-21). This weekend's tilt in Bowling Green against the Falcons marks the first time this season the Nanooks will play in the lower-48, as all eight contests thus far have been played in the 49th state.

• Alaska leads the all-time series against Bowling Green 20-19-5. Despite the one-game edge in the all-time series, the Nanooks trail by the same margin (10-9-3) in the series at Bowling Green.

• Last season when the teams met in Fairbanks, BGSU squeaked out a 1-0 upset of the host Nanooks in the first contest, before the Blue and Gold exacted revenge with a 3-0 shutout in the rematch to earn a series split.

• The Nanooks are 6-3-1 against the Falcons in the last 10 meetings and neither team has completed a weekend sweep since Alaska took a pair in Bowling Green on Feb. 10-11, 2006 by scores of 3-1 and 4-3.

• SR F Dion Knelsen leads the Nanooks in scoring against the Falcons with 3-4-7 in eight career games.

• The Blue and Gold suffered their first loss of the season last Friday night by a tight 3-2 decision, before getting back on track with their third CCHA win in Saturday's 3-1 against the then No.9 Irish.

• FR F Andy Taranto recorded a point in each game against the Irish last weekend to bring his season totals to 3-5-8 through eight games and extend his scoring streak to four games. He has 2-3-5 in the last four games and is tied for first in the league for freshman scoring but is tops amongst the CCHA rookies with 1.25 points per game.

• For the first time in the program's 31-year NCAA history the Alaska Nanooks broke into the top-10 of the national college hockey rankings. Alaska, who has been ranked in the top-20 for four straight weeks now climbed into ninth place in this week's USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Online and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine men's college hockey polls. The highest the Nanooks had ever been ranked prior to this week in either of the two most prominent college hockey polls was 11th on the USCHO.com poll for three straight weeks (Feb. 11-Feb. 25)) during the 2001-02 season.
