Nanooks drop contest to Seattle Pacific

FAIRBANKS, AK – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team finished up their two game road trip and fell to the Seattle Pacific Falcons 3-1. Seattle Pacific, ranked seventh in the West Region, picked up 17 kills and 16 digs from Sarah Risser in defeating the Nanooks by he scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-15.
 
The Nanooks jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the first set before the Falcons went on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 14-12. From that point forward Seattle Pacific never surrendered the lead and scored the matches final three points to win the set and take a 1-0 lead.
 
Alaska battled back strong in the second set, after trailing 14-13 the Nanooks ran off six straight points and never looked back to take the set 25-19. The Falcons took back control of the match in the third set as they broke open a close match to outscore the Nanooks 16-7 down the stretch to take the lead 2-1.
 
The final set saw the Falcons run out to a 21-9 lead to cruise to victory for the set and the match. Seattle Pacific outhit the Nanooks .221 to .148 for the match and also out blocked Alaska 12-6.
 
The Nanooks were led by senior outside hitter Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) who had a match-high 19 kills and also had nine digs. Thigpen also hit a team best .304 for the match. Junior Melissa Refuerzo (Anchorage, AK) was the other Nanook with double digit kills with 11.
 
Freshman Allison Oddy (Chilliwack, BC) led four Nanooks with double digit digs as she collected 15. Jennifer Holland (Sterling, AK) (14), Heather Lyons (Anchorage, AK) (11) and Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) (10) also had highs in digs. Sherman also contributed 23 assists. Junior middle Erica Gage (Palo Alto, CA) had a hand in four of the Nanooks six blocks.
 
Risser led the Falcons with 17 kills and 16 digs and Anna Herold had a match-high 25 digs. Amber Johnson had nine blocks for Seattle Pacific while Lindsey Wodrich chipped in 13 digs in the win.
 
The Nanooks will return to action Thursday, October 22 when they host Western Washington in a GNAC contest. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
